There is a reason they’re called “man’s best friend.” Owning a dog is one of the greatest joys a person can have. The benefits are numerous, the responsibilities are vast. You’re taking care of another living, breathing creature. Dog ownership has many benefits and if the dog is trained well there is no downside to owning one of these great companion animals. There are numerous reasons why everyone should have a dog and here are just a few:
- Protection – Dogs are fiercely loyal to their owners and homes. A dogs bark can alert you to an intruder or other sign of danger. Many times would-be burglars are deterred with just a bark from an alert dog.
- Companionship – Dogs love to be with their people. Curled up at your feet while you work on the computer or watch tv, by your side as you fix dinner – they love to be with you. Your dog will stay by your side as long as it lives. Dogs also have a strong sense of empathy and are able to sense changes in our emotions and provide a source of comfort in troubling times.
- Improved Health – Owning a dog has been proven to prolong your own life and improve your health. Studies show that dog owners have lower blood pressure and less risk of heart disease and diabetes. Playing with and walking your dog keeps both you active and healthy. Training groups provide a source of further exercise as well as a way to meet other people with common interests. And let’s not forget the laughs that all dogs can are capable of starting. Laughter is good for the soul and a proven factor in living a longer life.
- Responsibility – A dog is a great training tool for children on how to care for another living, breathing being. In addition to the time responsibility required to train, walk and care for a dog, there is also a financial responsibility. The cost of food, regular preventative medical care, and dog obedience classes must be factored into your budget when you bring a dog into your family. Lifetime training is recommended for you and your dog to have a happy, healthy relationship.
Dog ownership has many more benefits that vastly outweigh life without a dog.
*NOTE – If you’re interested in getting a dog DO NOT buy from an online store, pet store or “backyard breeder”. Please first consider adopting through a shelter, rescue group or an accredited AKC breeder.
